Mission
Center for Climate Change Adaptation Strategy
The Disaster Prevention Research Institute has long served as a central hub for climate change research, producing significant achievements and leading Japan’s studies and science policy on extreme weather events associated with climate change.
With the impacts of global warming already manifest, the risks posed by climate change on a planetary scale are rapidly escalating. Toward 2050, when a temperature increase of 2°C is projected, impact assessments and the formulation of adaptation strategies have become matters of urgent necessity. In particular, beyond hydrometeorological hazards, pressing challenges include addressing compound disasters, infrastructure such as transportation systems, and sectors such as agriculture, thereby requiring the diversification of research efforts.
In response, this Center was established on July 1, 2024, to advance research on the projection of meteorological and hydrological disasters expected to intensify under climate change, as well as on societal adaptation to such hazards. The Center also promotes collaborative research involving scholars both within and beyond the university, and actively facilitates the dissemination of findings for the benefit of society.
